Prof. Esteban’s research focuses on microbial biodiversity and its role in shaping the functioning of aquatic and soil ecosystems. By characterising microbial communities at both local and wider scales, her work aims to improve our ability to understand and predict how these systems respond to environmental change.

Prof. Esteban leads a programme that brings science and conservation together to shine a light on these hidden species in natural ecosystems. Working closely with environmental organisations, she aims to ensure that these tiny but vital organisms are recognised and included in how we protect and manage natural habitats.

Another strand of Prof. Esteban’s research explores the rare microbial consortia living in wet woodlands. Using both molecular tools and traditional microscopy, her team studies these unusual aquatic microbes, some of which are new to science. These rare habitats act as refuges for a remarkable variety of microbial species that have yet to be documented. This research into “oases” of microbial life is supported by funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Systematics Association, and UKRI (Natural Environment Research Council) (UK).

Prof Esteban is also a committed STEM Ambassador who brings science to life through engaging public events and partnerships with schools. Her sustained contributions to outreach and public engagement within local schools and community events have earned national recognition, including an award presented at the House of Lords, runner-up in the Society of Biology Science Communication Award for Established Researchers, and a 2025 winner of “Recognising Excellence in Volunteering in South West England” by STEM Learning.
