Martin Carr is a Lecturer in Molecular Biology at the University of Huddersfield. His research centres on the evolution of the protistan relatives of animals, concentrating mainly on the choanoflagellates. This work covers phylogenetics, population genetics, genomics and taxonomy, with recent work looking at freshwater:marine transitions, the evolution of sex and protein synthesis in choanoflagellates. Martin also studies the evolution of mobile DNA, called transposable elements, within protists. Although most eukaryotic diversity is found in unicellular organisms, studies on transposable elements have focused on multicellular organisms. Martin’s work looks at how transposable elements persist in eukaryotes, despite existing in “genomic conflict” with their hosts.
