My joint position at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (a UK government laboratory) and The Natural History Museum allows me to bring fundamental research into the realm of applied science, via projects (currently) investigating eukaryotic microbial parasites, plant rhizosphere microbial communities, developing environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques for pathogen horizon scanning and assessing disease risk, microbiome and pathobiome analyses, pathogen characterisation and predictive modelling in aquaculture settings, pathogen/parasite lifecycles, antimicrobial resistance gene diversity and profileration, and metagenomic and transcriptomic assays of ecosystem community structure and function. I have a particular interest in Cercozoa, Endomyxa (ascetosporeans, phytomyxids, and their relatives), Microsporidia and their relatives, and parasitic alveolates. I am currently President of the International Society of Protistologists (ISOP), Protistology-UK (P-UK), and am Topic Lead for aquatic animal disease in the newly-established Sustainable Aquaculture Futures centre at Exeter University/Cefas.
